Speech-Language Therapy

Speech-language therapy is individualized treatment delivered by a licensed speech-language pathologist that targets the skills underlying reading, writing, speaking, and listening. At Little City Speech it is always delivered in person — in one of our partner schools during the school day, or one-on-one at our Bangor office — for students from PreK through high school.

Who this is for

Students who are hard to understand, who struggle to follow directions or express ideas, who are falling behind in reading, or who have a speech or language goal on an IEP. If you are not sure whether therapy is the right step, an evaluation usually is.

What therapy actually looks like

Sessions are short, frequent, and built around a small number of specific goals. A therapist works with a student individually or in a small group, usually two or three times a week for 20 to 30 minutes, using play, conversation, books, and structured practice depending on the student's age and target skills.

  • Individual or small-group sessions, scheduled around the school day
  • Goals written in plain language, so families know what is being worked on
  • Practice that moves from single sounds or words toward real conversation
  • Strategies shared with teachers and families so skills carry over

How we track progress

Data is collected every session and reported formally four times a year, aligned to each student's IEP goals. That cadence means school teams and families always know where things stand, rather than finding out at an annual review.

Why every session is in person

Speech work depends on close, hands-on cues — seeing how a sound is formed, hearing it shaped in real time, and holding a young student's attention. We do not offer teletherapy. Our therapists live in the greater Bangor area and are in the building, the hallway, and the IEP meeting.

Questions about speech-language therapy

How long does speech therapy take?

It depends entirely on the student, the goals, and how consistently the skills are practiced outside of sessions. Some articulation goals resolve in a few months; language and literacy goals often span a school year or more. We will give you an honest estimate after an evaluation rather than before one.

Do we need a referral to start?

No referral is needed for individual therapy. Start with a free phone consultation — call (207) 215-6839 — and we will talk through your situation and recommend a path forward. Services provided through a partner school run through that school's IEP process instead.
