Lindamood-Bell® Instruction
Lindamood-Bell® programs develop the sensory-cognitive processes underneath reading and comprehension — the ability to picture the sounds in a word, and the ability to picture what a passage is describing. Little City Speech provides instruction informed by these programs, delivered in person by a Lindamood-Bell trained clinician.
Who this is for
Students who have had reading intervention that did not move the needle, who decode adequately but retain almost nothing of what they read, or whose spelling stays unstable no matter how many word lists they practice.
Symbol imagery
Symbol imagery is the ability to visualize the letters in a word — the process that lets a reader hold a word in mind long enough to decode it accurately and spell it consistently. Weakness here shows up as slow, effortful reading and as spelling that changes from one attempt to the next.
Concept imagery
Concept imagery is the ability to create a mental picture of what language describes. Students weak in this area can read a page aloud fluently and then be unable to say what happened, because nothing was being visualized as they read. It affects listening comprehension just as much as reading.
How we use it
This is one approach among several in our toolkit, chosen when a student's evaluation profile points to it. We are an independent local practice, not a Lindamood-Bell Learning Center — our clinician is trained in these methods and applies them within an individualized therapy plan.

Is Little City Speech a Lindamood-Bell Learning Center?
No. We are an independent speech-language pathology practice in Bangor. Our clinician has completed Lindamood-Bell® training and draws on those methods where a student's profile calls for them. Lindamood-Bell® is a registered trademark of Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes.
How is this different from regular reading tutoring?
Tutoring generally reteaches content. This work targets the underlying processing that makes the content stick — the imagery skills that let a student decode accurately and hold meaning. That is why it is often the right next step for a student who has already had tutoring without much change.
